The Greek Plays: Lysistrata and Oedipus Rex

A Note From the Director

Lysistrata

Lysistrata is an ancient Greek comedy by Aristophanes, originally performed in 411 BC. It is a comic account of a woman's extraordinary mission to end the Peloponnesian War by denying all the men sex, which was the only thing they truly and deeply desired. Lysistrata persuades the women of the warring cities to withhold sexual privileges from their husbands and lovers as a means of forcing the men to negotiate peace. The play is notable for being an early exposé of sexual relations in a male-dominated society.

This production of Lysistrata features a classic Greek setting contrasted with contemporary language and writing. Essentially, the audience gets a taste of the Greek environment but the language barrier typical to Greek settings has been translated for modern audiences. With this purpose in mind the audience is able to immerse itself in ancient Greek theatre with the assistance of an adapted text that helps guide individuals through the story.

Oedipus Rex

Oedipus is a tragedy by the ancient Greek playwright Sophocles, first performed in roughly 429 BCE. It follows the story of King Oedipus of Thebes as he discovers that he has unwittingly killed his own father, Laius, and married his own mother, Jocasta

The iconic story of Oedipus will feature a contemporary political and social environment adapted to the original Greek text. This version completely flip flops the idea from Lysistrata; the audience gets to see the Greek style of language set to the tone of modern-day America, showing how Greek drama still continues to influence our world today. Better yet? The mask work for Oedipus is inspired by contemporary news reporters, journalists, and politicians — all of which thematically speaks to the impact of the media world on today’s government and leaders.

As always, thank you, and we hope you enjoy the show,

Stephen Svoboda and Riley Gibson
